Wet diva

Legion Diva's experience at the ballpark on Thursday was a little wetter than expected. Despite the rain, she purchased an ear of grilled corn and munched away in one of the lower pressboxes as she took a break from her video duties.

As for action, Post 82's first baseman caught two line drives within minutes of each other. In case you didn't know, line drives are balls hit straight and flat that generally come at you at an astounding speed. You have to have quick reflexes to 1) not get killed by one and 2) to actually catch one.

The game was all about hitting, as evidenced by the 18-15 score and 3:30 a.m. end time, but it made for good video, which you can see on www.legionworldseries.com.

Hitting the stadium

After a last-minute flurry of activity, The Star's special section and Regional program will be in readers' hands beginning Thursday morning. Although the Legion Diva isn't pictured in the program, she's an expert on its contents. After working on coverage and anticipating what's going to happen Thursday morning when play begins, she's ready for the first pitch and will probably stop by the stadium in the morning.

Legion Diva begins

While it comes close to being the girliest name ever for a baseball blog, I, the Legion Diva, am getting ready to hit the streets - er, field - for the American Legion baseball Southeast Regional and World Series tournaments.

This blog is intended to be a spot for juicy Legion gossip, things that are seen and heard around Shelby and around the stadium itself during the tournaments. The focus is on Legion's ladies, but men should still read on to gain delightful insights into the way women see the game. Parts might be superficial. OK, so most of it will be, but it should be a lighthearted read and will hopefully offer a view of the tournaments that hasn't been a major focus.

Topics to hopefully tackle include players' moms, who has the prettiest uniforms, how the concession stand ladies make such nice burgers, best ways to stay cool, baseball terminology and rules for chicks, an experiment to see how long it takes a tube of lipstick to melt in the sweltering August N.C. heat, the wonderful women I meet along the way, and more.

And the goal of it all is to score big with readers. So feel free to leave comments and discuss things here. Have fun, take things lightly and please keep all comments ladylike (aka No trash talk).

I'm the Legion Diva, and I'm ready to play.
